The building of contemporary design, is the work of urban architect Roland Simounet, a disciple of Le Corbusier. The architect designed a structure in bare concrete, with extensive use of large windows opening onto the surrounding woodland and inner gardens. Four inner gardens recall the natural environment found in the four climatic phases of the Quaternary era. The building is set into sloping, wooded land with scattered rocks.

The rigid square plan is the basis for a transparent, subdivided volume. Successive levels of the museum follow the slope of the ground. The structure is very simple: Cement concrete walls left bare, with bas-reliefs, openwork beams (all with the same span) which provide both framework and natural light, and galleries supported by portal frames which also drain rainwater.
This building has just been listed as a 20th century historic monument by the RMH (Historical Museum Convention).
